Overview

The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Otolaryngology Academic Day is a premier educational event dedicated to advancing the field of Otolaryngology within the MedStar system and the greater DC, MD, and Northern VA region. This event is designed to provide continuing medical education-based training for otolaryngologists, ensuring they stay current on the latest advancements, treatments, and technologies in the field. This educational event brings together healthcare professionals, thought leaders, and industry innovators to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.


Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe leadership development opportunities in otolaryngology across career stages, including residency, early faculty roles, institutional leadership, and national professional organizations.
  2. Review current best practices in workup and treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer.
  3. Evaluate the role of non-traditional pursuits as a means for physicians to explore diverse interests and address professional burnout or dissatisfaction.
  4. Discuss medical and audiological management of sudden hearing loss, regarding timing of intervention and treatment options.
  5. State the critical importance of prevention in controlling the head and neck cancer problem.
  6. Define what constitutes failure of medical therapy when determining escalation strategies in sinonasal inflammatory disease.
  7. Compare pediatric otolaryngology practice models in academic medical centers versus community-based settings.
  8. Apply performance improvement strategies to increase the effectiveness of interprofessional teamwork and team-based care.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by MedStar Health. MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 

Credit Designation

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 6.50 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.

Physicians: MedStar Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Physician Assistants:  MedStar Health has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 6.50 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
