Personal Statement:
Dr. Richard Benson is currently Director of the “Office of Global Health and Health Disparities” (OGHHD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Prior to this, he was Associate Medical Director for the NIH Stroke Program at Medstar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC). He is fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and member of AAN Registry and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committees. Dr. Benson attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He also attended Meharry Medical College and received an MD and PhD in Neurophysiology. His research thesis dealt with “Excessive Methylation in Parkinsonism.” At Meharry, he received numerous research honors and was inducted in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) national medical honor society. Subsequently, he completed a neurology residency at the Harvard-Longwood neurology residency program in Boston, Massachusetts. After that, he completed a two-year stroke fellowship in the neurological Institute at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, while completing a master’s degree in Epidemiology. After fellowship, his clinical jobs included working at Long Island Jewish Medical Center; St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospitals; Alexandria-Fairfax Neurology, PC; and Inova Alexandria/Fairfax Hospitals.
Dr. Benson has worked in academia, the public, and the private sectors. Dr. Benson is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at Georgetown University Medical Center. His areas of interest and expertise include health disparities/inequities, minority, community and global health.
