Newly graduating advanced practice providers lack emergency medicine specific training. This poses risk to patients, increases job related stress and decreases the productivity of the providers.  National post-graduate training programs exist with the demonstration of improved quality and patient safety.  A formalized, structured program would address these issues as well as the the Maryland Board of Physicians requirement that PAs have a training program for advanced procedures prior to allowing independent practice.  Such educational programs also allow senior staff to remain current and maintain their competence in their practice.

MOST is an in situ simulation team-training program, which formally educates a functioning group of obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthesiologists labor and delivery nurses, NICU nurses, and postpartum nurses in the development of emergency response interventions in order to positively affect teamwork and outcomes. This enhances the practice of emergency response protocols and team debriefings. One strength of this program is that participants learn to act only in their normal designated role. To emphasize this team concept, CETT trainers are a multidisciplinary group of individuals who represent the various specialties in WIS.

This simulation training has an initial implementation with the OB program but there are advantages and lessons learned that would benefit other departments within the hospital.  30 CETT programs take place throughout the year primarily at Washington Hospital Center. However, because of its success at WHC, the program has been extended to other MedStar hospitals including MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Hospital Center, MedStar Harbor Hospital, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.
