Overview

This is a self-directed training module that introduces the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems (SCIMS) Consensus Guidelines for symptom-based diagnosis of complicated UTI (cUTI). cUTI is highly prevalent among people with spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D), but evidence-based diagnostic guidelines do not exist. The training outlines a decision-making algorithm, using reliable and validated Urinary Symptom Questionnaires for Neurogenic Bladder (USQNBs), with symptoms specific to bladder management by intermittent catheterization (USQNB-IC), indwelling catheterization (USQNB-IDC) and voiding (USQNB-V). This training is part of a project funded by National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR 90SIMS009-01-00). The survey part of the project was approved by the Georgetown University IRB, STUDY00004475.

Course ID: OD-040123

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the variety of urinary symptoms, dependent on bladder management method, that patients’ experience.
  2. Use the USQNB appropriate for a patient’s management method to determine if a symptom is endorsed repeatedly/consistently over time, and that this might be a “new normal”.
  3. Use the USQNB appropriate for the patient’s management method to encourage patients to be more like partners in their urinary health care.
  4. Use the USQNB appropriate for the patient’s management method to improve communication between patient and clinician about urinary symptoms, management, and health.
  5. Recognize the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team in promoting best practices in urinary health care.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by MedStar Health and Georgetown University. MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Credit Designation

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 1.0 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.

Nurses: This activity is approved for 1.0 ANCC contact hour(s). Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Physicians: MedStar Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Physician Assistants:
MedStar Health has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 12/31/2027. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
