Overview
The Update on Diabetes XLV symposium is designed to help healthcare providers caring for patients with diabetes. Faculty have been selected to provide an overview of the advances in diabetes care and treatment of diabetes complications. The challenges of diabetes management and practical way to overcome these barriers will be addressed through best practice guidelines. Presentations will focus on optimal ways to improve glucose control through technology and medications, and individualizing treatments for patients with diabetes.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the physiology of leptin and its role in glycemic control
  2. Review the newest guidelines for the treatment of hypertension with a focus on patients with diabetes.
  3. Recall the pathophysiology and treatment of dyslipidemia, including both non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment approaches.
  4. Describe the alternative devices to administer insulin beyond vials and simple insulin pens
  5. Review the latest continuous glucose monitors on the market and consider their application in your patients with diabetes.
  6. Identify the common hand complications of diabetes and summarize treatment methods.
  7. Recall the recent data associated with FDA approved incretin medications and list their indications.
  8. Describe the technology and applications of hybrid closed loop insulin pumps
  9. Review the causes of severe insulin resistance and treatment with diet, exercise and medications.
  10. Recognize the role of the medications in protecting the kidneys in patients being treated for diabetes.
