Overview

Registration is closed and will re open onsite September 8, 2023 at the Bethesda Marriott, Bethesda, MD

This stroke symposium is organized to provide an overview of recent updates and discuss practical issues surrounding the provision of state-of-the-art stroke care. Through formal lectures, case presentations, and interactive sessions, this comprehensive stroke conference will explore critical issues surrounding the assessment, management, and prognosis of stroke in the acute, sub-acute, and non-acute settings. This conference will equip health care providers with up-to-date, practical, evidence-based information about early stroke identification, evaluation, treatment, transport, and management. Through lectures, case presentations with interactive audience response sessions, and open discussions, this conference will highlight the most recent AHA/ASA acute ischemic stroke guidelines (2021), cutting-edge interventions, and research (trials from ISC 2023).

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify strategies to streamline early stroke identification (pre-hospital/hospital).
  2. Describe the most important acute brain and vessel imaging modalities e.g. CT/CTA, MRI/MRA, and conventional angiography, along with the benefits, risks, and limitations of each.
  3. Describe appropriate acute stroke intervention protocols for thrombolysis and embolectomy.
  4. Design and develop appropriate policies to rapidly and appropriately transfer patients to Comprehensive Stroke Centers for a higher level of care or acute interventions.
  5. Discuss the management of patients post-thrombolysis or other complications from acute interventions, especially in the COVID era.
  6. Discuss secondary stroke prevention strategies including medical management, and surgical options based on the specific etiology of the stroke.
  7. Describe the components of pre-hospital EMS screening of large vessel occlusion strokes.
  8. Describe the evidence-based practice for acute treatment and management of patients with acute stroke.
  9. Identify complications and associated interventions that may occur during the ICU care of the acute stroke patient.
  10. Discuss pros and cons to using tPA vs TNK for the acute stroke patient and logistics for conversion to TNK.
  11. Discuss medications utilized in secondary stroke prevention.
  12. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients with acute stroke.
  13. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with acute stroke.
