Overview

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), or Bedside Ultrasound, gives clinicians the ability to improve critical decision making and diagnostic testing with greater efficiency leading to better patient outcomes.

This 4-day blended learning course includes didactic, lectures, hands-on sessions, and pathologic image interpretation with cases using live models and ultrasound simulators. Topics will include cardiac, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, urinary, and vascular sonography.

This course is an approved regional course for the SHM-Chest POCUS COC pathway.

The course offers a total of 24.25 CE credits. 23.00 credit hours for the in-person clinical simulation course and 1.25 credit hours for the online pre-course modules (this information will be provided upon registration).

         Topics: Liver/Kidney, Diaphragm, Spleen/Kidney, bowel/gastric, Abdominal Aorta, IVC, LE DVT, and U/S-guided PIV practice

         Topics: Gallbladder, bile ducts, E-FAST (cardiac, lung, IVC, RUQ, LUQ, free fluid); LE vasculature and lung review

Day 4: Cardiac & Pulmonary

  • Introduction to A4C and SC

         Topics: Apical 4 Chamber (A4C), Subcostal (SC), and IVC. Repeat PLAx, PSAx, and Lungs
  • CAE Vimedix Cases
  • Interactive Pathology Image Review
  • 1:1 Learner: Instructor Hands-on Evaluation

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic principles of ultrasound including machine settings, probes, and image acquisition, quality and interpretation.
  2. Demonstrate clinical reasoning, interpretation and diagnosis of patient cases utilizing ultrasound technology and ultrasound simulated cases.
  3. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients who require point-of-care ultrasound.
  4. Demonstrate acquisition of normal anatomical views of major organs/structures utilizing ultrasound technology and standardized patients.
  5. Demonstrate interpretation of major organ/structure pathologies utilizing ultrasound technology and ultrasound simulator.
  6. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients who require point-of-care ultrasound.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education(ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

 

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team and learners will receive 23.00 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.
