Overview

The Human Factors Workshop: A Systems Approach to Patient Safety - 2024 is now sold out!

If you are interested in future Human Factors Education and Workshops, you can fill out this Education Interest Form, and we will be in contact!

_________________________

Human factors is a multi-disciplinary science that focuses on understanding the interaction among humans and other elements of a system within a given environment. Applying human factors to healthcare reduces medical errors and allows clinicians to deliver better patient care. Human factors boost work processes, enhance patient safety, reduce inefficiencies, and improve quality. As healthcare delivery becomes increasingly more complex, human factors engineering has proven to be a powerful approach for proactively reducing harm. MedStar Health is proud to offer this workshop, which brings together leaders across the system, including human factors engineers, risk management professionals, practicing clinicians, and healthcare safety leaders with vast experience studying risk and implementing innovative change within healthcare organizations. The workshop will include onsite simulations.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Analyze how work-system elements interact to create safe/unsafe conditions.
  2. Summarize the core principles of safety science and human factors and how these principles apply to healthcare.
  3. Adapt and experiment with real-world scenarios using human factors tools and principles.
  4. Compare, contrast, and address work-as-imagined and work-as-done.
  5. Apply the socio-technical systems model.
  6. Identify system hazards and examine solutions to support the way humans work and empower teams to deliver high-quality care.
  7. Integrate a team-based approach for evaluating technologies for procurement.
  8. Apply a human factors team-based approach to the FMEA process, task analysis, and heuristic evaluations.
  9. Describe the factors that make a solution effective, sustainable, and feasible in healthcare.
