Overview
MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center and DC Health’s 2nd Annual Webinar to Address Barriers to Lung Cancer Screening in the District will highlight current best practices for busy clinicians and navigators to facilitate lung cancer screening in eligible patients. Lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer deaths in Washington, D.C. and across the nation. Although CT Lung Screening can decrease lung cancer mortality in high-risk patients, the complexities of obtaining a lung screening can pose significant challenges to patients, especially those of minority populations with health disparities. The American Lung Association’s 6th annual report shows DC lagging behind the nation in lung cancer screening and treatment (46th in the nation). This multidisciplinary panel of highly respected faculty from the forward-thinking renowned institutions of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Georgetown University will address the multi-faceted barriers that the eligible population faces for lung cancer screening and best practices they have implemented to increase lung cancer screening rates at their institutions. Our keynote speaker will cover overcoming common barriers to integrating tobacco treatment into lung screening. There will be updates on best practices for integrating tobacco needs assessment into the EHR and providing a high-quality shared decision-making visit. This webinar will focus on patient navigation, which has been shown to improve cancer screening and follow-up in underserved populations. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with faculty in a Q&A session and access presentation materials and some lung cancer educational information to share with patients.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Delineate roles and responsibilities of providers who treat patients with a history of cigarette smoking.
  2. Identify how modifications to the EHR help with smoking cessation counseling to the lung screening eligible population
  3. Identify what are the best practices to Integrating Evidence-Based Tobacco Treatments into Lung Cancer Screening
  4. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of lung cancer screening eligible patients.
