Overview
This MedStar Health simulation course was created to address a knowledge gap related to interprofessional communication and clinical decision-making for providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team involved in the treatment of critical care patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD). This simulation will focus on recognizing when it is necessary to escalate care - and the use of effective communication techniques to do so. The simulations emphasize accurate clinical decision-making, in order to facilitate appropriate actions, when treating common cardiovascular & hemodynamic complications of critical care LVAD patients.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify signs, symptoms, and Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) findings, that indicate a stable patient.
  2. Identify signs, symptoms, and LVAD device findings that indicate an unstable patient.
  3. Perform appropriate focused physical exam and identify diagnostic tests to evaluate an unstable LVAD patient.
  4. Identify pertinent positives and negatives of the LVAD-focused physical exam and diagnostic exam results.
  5. Discuss a systematic and focused list of differential diagnoses and the appropriate interventions.
  6. Demonstrate when and how to escalate care and/or activate the Rapid Response Team.
  7. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of LVAD patients.
  8. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of LVAD patients.
