Overview
Sexual and reproductive health in health profession curricula is often limited to reproductive health alone due to lack of prioritization or lack of expertise in sexuality (Simmonds et al., 2017). Studies have demonstrated that though patients believe sexual health is important and want their providers to address it, most providers do not due to lack of education, time, or personal comfort (Kingberg & Knudson, 2011; Roos, Sultan, & Thakar, 2012; Shifren et al., 2009). A cultural climate in the US deemphasizes sexual health education and ignores its significant role in overall well-being, which trickles down into the clinical setting (Benyounes, 2019; Frabotta, 2019).

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Review the relevance and correlation between sexual health and overall health.
  2. Identify strategies for discussing sexual health in a respectful, nonjudgmental manner.
  3. List the individual components of a comprehensive sexual health history (the 8 Ps).
  4. Discuss the motivation behind sexual practices and nontraditional relationship structures.
  5. Examine personal biases regarding sexual practices, sexuality and intimacy.
  6. Demonstrate competency in taking a comprehensive sexual health history.
