Overview

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in the United States—claiming more lives than breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers combined. Yet, it continues to receive disproportionately low attention in public discourse, research funding, and early detection efforts. To confront this urgent disparity, MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center and DC Health proudly present the 3rd Annual Lung Health in the District Webinar: “Spotlight on Women’s Lung Health: Early Diagnosis, Lifesaving Impact.”

This dynamic, multidisciplinary event brings together esteemed experts from the NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center,  the University of Maryland and the DC Cancer Registry to explore the complex challenges surrounding early lung cancer detection in women. Through insightful presentations and interactive dialogue, attendees will gain actionable knowledge, access educational resources for patient outreach, and engage directly with faculty during a live Q&A session.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Increase Awareness and Education Educate healthcare professionals and the public about the rising incidence of lung cancer in women Promote awareness that lung cancer affects non-smokers, especially women, to reduce stigma and improve early detection.
  2. Enhance Early Detection and Diagnosis Develop and disseminate guidelines for recognizing subtle symptoms of lung cancer in women. Train clinicians to avoid gender-based diagnostic bias and consider lung cancer in younger and non-smoking female patients. Ensuring that all genders with a smoking history are appropriately screened for Lung cancer screening eligibility
  3. Advance Research and Data Collection Support studies investigating biological, hormonal, and environmental factors contributing to increased lung cancer rates in women. Encourage inclusion of women—especially non-smokers and minorities—in lung cancer clinical trials.
  4. Improve Genetic Screening and Personalized Treatment Promote genetic testing for mutations like EGFR in women diagnosed with lung cancer. Expand access to targeted therapies tailored to genetic profiles common in female patients.
  5. Combat Medical Stereotypes and Bias Implement training programs to address gender stereotypes in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. Advocate for equitable healthcare practices that recognize the unique presentation of lung cancer in women.
