Overview

Human Factors is a multi-disciplinary science focused on understanding how people interact with the elements of a system within a given environment. As healthcare delivery becomes increasingly complex, human factors engineering has proven to be a powerful approach for proactively reducing harm.

This workshop is centered on understanding clinical workflows through the lens of human psychology and human limitations. You will walk out with concrete tools to evaluate your current and future workflows and identify opportunities for error. Particular emphasis will be placed on the application of human factors principles to emerging AI-enabled workflows through a series of individual and group activities. The workshop offers 11 CE credits as below.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain how human perceptual, cognitive, and memory limits affect interactions with systems and technology.
  2. Evaluate clinical tasks to determine where system demands exceed human cognitive capacity.
  3. Create task analyses that reveal the mental processes required for safe and efficient work.
  4. Analyze how sensory modalities, attention limits, and resource demands shape clinicians’ ability to notice and act on critical information.
  5. Describe how working memory, long-term memory, and mental calculations support or hinder clinical performance.
  6. Evaluate clinical decision making by identifying how cognitive processes and biases influence judgment and error.
  7. Apply cognitive modeling to identify how AI outputs interact with human perception, cognition, and decision making.
  8. Contrast how individuals and teams build, maintain, and lose situation awareness.
