The diagnosis and treatment of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS - Now referred to as autoimmune encephalitis) remain important challenges in pediatric medicine as children continue to present from the debilitating symptoms of both disorders. This conference is aimed at reviewing this disorder as has it evolved over the past 20 years, to update pediatricians on the front lines, to arm them with the latest evaluation treatment guidelines, and, to inform them of the ongoing research as it is happening. This conference strives to present these topics in an organized, concise, and complete manner to educate physicians and healthcare practitioners who may encounter children suffering from PANDAS/PANS.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the signs and symptoms of PANDAS/PANS and the level of severity based on established scales and guidelines
  2. Discuss the conventional treatment guidelines for PANDAS/PANS including prophylactic antibiotics and intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) as well as new medication currently used and studied.
  3. Evaluate novel approaches of treatment, including the roles of tonsillectomy, therapeutic plasma apheresis (TPA), Rituximab, and other proposed treatments, and diagnosis, including streptococcus surveillance and radiologic imaging
