Overview

MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute is proud to be hosting the 3rd Annual MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute Symposium (MGTI 2021). The educational program will consist of three parallel tracks navigating the diagnosis and treatment options for kidney, pancreas, liver, and intestinal disorders including those requiring a transplant.

These tracks include: Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation, Current Issues in the Care of Dialysis and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Patients, and Update on Liver Diseases, Intestinal Failure, and Transplantation for Children. Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation track will address the gap between best and current practices in order to provide the best care to patients, reduce morbidity and mortality, and reduce the burden of liver disease in the Mid-Atlantic region. Up-to-date information on liver disease and transplant topics relevant to community practitioners will be highlighted. We will focus special attention on tumors multidisciplinary management of tumors of the hepatobiliary tract as well. Through the Current Issues in the Care of Dialysis and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Patients track the content will examine kidney and pancreas transplantation with a special emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach in pre and post-transplant care of patients with renal dysfunction and post-transplantation. The third track, Update on Liver Diseases, Intestinal Failure, and Transplantation for Children will focus on topics that will be of interest to pediatric gastroenterology, primary care and allied health providers in the course of their interactions with infants and children with small bowel disease, parenteral nutrition, and chronic liver diseases including those likely to lead to transplantation.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the growing indications for liver transplantation, including alcoholic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
  2. Analyze the strategies used to increase the donor pool and provide more patients access to life saving transplants.
  3. Discuss the role of minimally invasive surgery in the management of patients with liver tumors.
  4. Recognize the benefits of living donor liver transplantation.
  5. Discuss the management of patients with acute and chronic liver diseases.
  6. Discuss the role of intestinal transplant in the management of short gut syndrome.
  7. Assess the recent changes in allocation policy and what this means for the patient waiting for a kidney transplant.
  8. Review what we know and are now learning about the impact of COVID-19 on transplant patients.
  9. Discuss the options available for living donors through paired kidney donation.
  10. Present the new technologies now coming into use to better monitor transplant patients for early signs of rejection and graft dysfunction.
  11. Recognize the pro’s and con’s of the use of belatacept in kidney transplant patients.
  12. Learn about the potential benefits of pancreas transplantation for patients with type II diabetes.
  13. Examine the pitfalls and guidelines to follow for patients needing dialysis in the immediate post-transplant period.
  14. Recognize what types and characteristics of formerly uncurable abdominal tumors may now be treatable with various forms of intestinal and multiple organ transplantation.
  15. Recognize the clinical presentations of the various intrahepatic cholestatic syndromes in infancy and childhood, differences from mechanical biliary obstruction, and understand the roles of medical and surgical therapies including transplantation and still investigational treatments.
  16. Assess challenges to maintenance of parenteral nutrition in permanent intestinal failure, including medical and interventional pathways to indefinite central vein access.
  17. Recognize newer indications for intestinal transplantation, shifts in demographics of transplant candidates, and future challenges to obtaining successful technical short-term and immunological long-term outcomes.
  18. Recognize the evolving societal and economic obstacles to successful organ transplantation in the 21st century.
  19. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care for transplant treatment.
  20. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of transplant patients.
