Overview

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women. Diagnosis and treatments are part of the practice of a wide number of medical specialists and there are national initiatives calling for a multidisciplinary approach to the care of breast cancer patients. The multiple components and aspects of the treatment of breast cancer require a high level of coordinated care among different specialties. This coordination becomes even more challenging because of the rapid evolution of new treatment modalities and is especially important due to of the possibility of improved outcomes both in terms of curing the disease, as well as maintaining the physical and psychological well-being of the patient. We will offer presentations and panel discussions on a number of currently important topics on the 360 view of treatment in breast cancer, including integrative approaches to treatment, targeted chemotherapy, and de-escalation of surgical management. Speakers will seek to discuss financial toxicity in breast cancer. Surgical topics include oncoplastic surgery, the role of prophylactic mastectomy, technical pearls for nipple sparing mastectomy, re-innervation / nerve sparing mastectomies, lymphatic surgery, and state of the art reconstruction. We will examine nipple-sparing mastectomy both therapeutic and prophylactic, treatment of breast cancer in a previously augmented breast, the status of MRI screening for breast cancer, the effects of reconstruction on the delivery of post-mastectomy radiation, and the evolving role of alloplastic materials in breast reconstruction. It will also cover in depth the state-of-the-art emerging field of lymphatic surgery to treat lymphedema as well as sensory concerns to the most complex reconstructions available covering topics such as sensation sparing mastectomies to restoring sensation with nerve transfers. Experts in the field will cover the state of partial breast irradiation, intraoperative radiation therapy, timing and indications for post-mastectomy radiation, and chemotherapy and its role in restaging breast cancer.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify how artificial intelligence may impact breast cancer care in the future.
  2. Recognize the impact that financial toxicity related to the care of breast cancer can have on access to care and on outcomes.
  3. Implement integrative approaches to management of side effects.
  4. Recognize the impact of breast cancer on the young patient.
  5. Identify new frontiers of targeted chemotherapy.
  6. Discuss strategies to de-escalate surgical approaches.
  7. Apply an evidence-based protocol for the conservative treatment of lymphedema, including primary, adjunctive, and alternative treatments.
  8. Identify the new options available to surgically treat patients with lymphedema.
  9. Describe different philosophies regarding radiation delivery including new techniques and how to minimize side effects to the surrounding tissue.
  10. Implement surgical techniques designed to improve the likelihood of nipple preservation and reduce the risk of flap or nipple necrosis with mastectomy.
  11. Define the roles and responsibilities of physical and occupational therapists in the continuum of care post-mastectomy.
  12. Describe different philosophies regarding timing of radiation, radiation delivery and reconstruction and how to minimize side effects.
  13. Identify the different methods of breast reconstruction including implant-based reconstruction, flap-based reconstruction, and microsurgical-assisted free flap reconstruction.
  14. Identify the importance of the total care of the patient including the financial burden and impact this may have on the healing process.
  15. Recognize racial disparities in breast cancer treatment.
  16. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients with breast cancer.
  17. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with breast cancer.

Your health and safety are MedStar Health, Inc.’s top priority, and we are taking the necessary precautions to make ensure this year’s events are safe as we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19.

Breast Cancer Coordinated Care (BC3) is committed to providing a welcoming and safe learning environment while cautiously planning for a live conference. We will continue to monitor federal, state and local recommendations and will update these protocols and measures as appropriate.

We reserve the right to modify these policies and procedures at any time given the rapidly changing nature of the current global pandemic.

General safety and wellness measures include but are not limited to:

  • Hand sanitizing stations throughout public areas
  • Cleaning between sessions
  • Signage posted with reminders for physical distancing and hand washing

COVID-19 vaccination is required for attendance. In cases where an attendee or exhibitor has a valid medical or religious exemption, a negative PCR COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival to the convention center will be required.

Please check back for updates on how to input your COVID vaccination or exemption status prior to the conference.

Venue
As part of our Connect with Confidence initiatives, Marriott strongly encourages our associates to be vaccinated for COVID 19.  Through Marriott’s Vaccination Care Program, a financial award is provided to US hotel associates at managed properties who get vaccinated.  However, vaccination is not mandatory and information on vaccination status is shared by our associates on a voluntary basis.

For more information about to expect at the JW Marriott please visit https://whattoexpect.marriott.com/wasrb

COVID-19 Assumption of Risk, Waiver and Compliance Commitment
I am aware of the inherent risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus involved in attending the in-person Breast Cancer Coordinated Care (BC3) conference and that COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease that can lead to sever illness and death. I voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 when attending MedStar Health, Inc. related conferences and waive liability against MedStar Health, Inc., it’s associates, directors, contractors and staff for any loss, damages, or suffering relating to exposure to COVID-19.

Daily Self Health Screening
BC3 recommends that all participants screen themselves daily for symptoms. Symptoms may appear 2 – 14 days after exposure to the virus. The following symptoms are outlined on the CDC Website indicating an individual may have COVID-19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Individuals who have these symptoms and are unwell should not attend the BC3 Conference. Additionally, if the person is onsite, affected individuals should notify event organizers to allow for additional communication to participants.
