Overview

This weekly multidisciplinary, case-based conference allows attending cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, residents, fellows and other specialists from MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Cardiac Surgery program to hear expert speakers lecture live or via the internet/WebEx on relevant topics, review pertinent journal articles, discuss internal cases which resulted in morbidity or mortality, and share updates on current research being done in the field of cardiac surgery.  Cardiac surgery quality and performance database is used to drive educational content.

Grand Rounds provides a venue for the healthcare team to learn with, from, and about each other by developing continuous lifelong learning through lectures and case discussions on relevant topics, as well as current research. MedStar Health’s quality and performance data is used to drive educational content.


Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to;

  1. Practice of interdisciplinary mutual education, where each discipline educates learners in other disciplines of current practices in his field and scientific rationale for these clinical advances.
  2. Develop a personal habit of continuous lifelong medical knowledge acquisition with direct applicability to patient care, replacing old methods of care and procedures with new proven approaches that will improve patient outcomes.
  3. Apply information technology advances into the practice of field of medicine focusing on e-prescribing, electronic medical records, pay for performance, and compliance with new federal health care regulations.
  4. Distinguish between an unavoidable poor patient outcome and a failure to utilize best practices and/or apply hospital policies in the setting of an adverse patient outcome.
  5. Apply the knowledge gained from the discussion of the care of an individual patient to the care of future patients within the framework of best practices and hospital policies.
  6. Utilize case presentations, applying pedagogical principles, evidence-based literature citations, audience engagement and measured improvement in sequential experiences.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by MedStar Health. MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
