This annual educational symposium is proud to update our medical community on the state-of-the-art care of gastrointestinal and soft tissue neoplasms, while focusing on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of these rare and complicated disease entities, including gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors and soft tissue sarcomas. National and international renowned guest speakers and distinguished faculty, including those from MedStar Health and MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute will discuss the significant roles of evolving new diagnostic modalities, immune and molecular targeted therapies, the use of organ-sparing surgery, and the use of state-of-the art radiotherapeutics in these rare and complex cancers.

Objectives

Nurse Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the different types of gastric and soft tissue neoplasms.
  2. Determine the role of surgery in soft tissue neoplasms.
  3. Describe the role of chemotherapy in soft tissue neoplasms.
  4. Explain the role of radiation therapy in soft tissue neoplasms.

Physician Assistant Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze the advancement of molecular testing and tumor profiling to guide targeted therapy of soft tissue sarcoma.
  2. Differentiate the benefits and risks of preoperative versus postoperative radiotherapy.
  3. Identify the advantages of proton beam therapy.
  4. Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of patients with soft tissue sarcoma.
  5. Recognize the various imaging and laboratory modalities that should be considered in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with neuroendocrine tumors.
  6. Identify the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings characteristic of soft tissue sarcoma.

Physician Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss novel imaging techniques for gastric neoplasms and gastric neuroendocrine tumors (NETs)
  2. Discuss novel imaging techniques for soft tissue sarcomas
  3. Identify the diagnostic and therapeutic role of endoscopy in gastric tumors and NETs
  4. Recognize the importance of molecular markers in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric neoplasms
  5. Identify novel radiotherapeutic targeted and immune therapies for gastric NETs and soft tissue sarcomas
  6. Recognize the role and indications for radiation therapy, including proton beam therapy, in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas
  7. Implement best practices in managing "lumps and bumps" vs. soft tissue sarcomas by primary care providers and general surgeons
