Overview

Online registration is now closed.  We will start onsite registration at 7:00 am on 10/4/19.

If you have any questions regarding your current registration, please call 202-780-1655 before 2:00 pm on 10/3/19.

Due to advances in medical and surgical therapies for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), children and adolescents with CHD have over a 90% survival rate. As a result, the number of adults with CHD in the United States has now surpassed the number of children with these conditions. This two-day program offers physicians and other health care providers a comprehensive review of the evaluation, diagnosis and management of adult congenital heart disease, including the management of heart disease during pregnancy. Through a series of multidisciplinary lectures and question and answer sessions the ACHD conference invites all disciplines to examine the progression and treatment of congenital heart disease from adolescence through adulthood. Track 1 will be an interactive multidisciplinary session integrating expertise from cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and maternal fetal medicine specialists on the care of the pregnant patient with cardiac disease. Women with CHD are 8 times as likely to experience cardiovascular complications during pregnancy and have a 6 times higher risk of dying than women without CHD. Managing these patients through pregnancy safely can be challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. This track will be case based, with an opportunity for discussion and interaction with the experts. Track 2 will be an interactive session that focuses on specific cardiac defects by providing an integrated anatomy review with 3D heart models, imaging review with a focus on echocardiogram and MRI, and key clinical management review. The session will include audience response questions and an opportunity to review 3D heart models with experts in cardiac pathology.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

Nursing Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the increasing prevalence of adults with congenital heart disease and address some of the complications that can result from lifelong congenital heart disease

2. Consult and coordinate with expert maternal/fetal medicine care for optimization of outcomes for mothers and babies and determining appropriate contraceptive options

3. Identify underlying cardiac anatomy and structural repairs in congenital heart disease

Physician Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the increasing prevalence of adults with congenital heart disease and address some of the complications that can result from lifelong congenital heart disease
  2. Consult and coordinate with expert maternal-fetal medicine care for optimization of outcomes for mothers and babies
  3. Review current and innovative imaging techniques for simple and complex congenital heart lesion
  4. Review new and innovative PAH therapies that might be utilized for patients with adult congenital heart disease
  5. Review new and innovative advanced mechanical support therapies that might be utilized for patients with adult congenital heart disease
  6. Consult and coordinate with ACHD and PH experts for the care of ACHD patients with PAH and single ventricle heart disease
  7. Consult and coordinate with ACHD experts for cardiac transplantation and advanced mechanical support evaluation in ACHD patients
  8. Recognize the importance of consulting ACHD specialists in the evaluation and care of pregnant ACHD patients
  9. Appraise the catheter-based interventional procedures in adults with congenital heart disease
  10. Appraise the indications of pacemaker and defibrillator therapy in adults with congenital heart disease
