Overview
This interprofessional live course provides continuing education to physicians and nurses. Disability Ethics and Justice in Clinical Education brings together disability bioethics, clinical education, and disability justice to examine how healthcare education can prepare learners to recognize and challenge ableism while advancing more ethical, equitable, and person-centered care. Through an innovative combination of simulation, lived experience, and spoken word poetry, the presenters will explore disability as both an ethical and justice issue and invite participants to critically examine the assumptions, language, and practices that shape the care of disabled people. Participants will consider how healthcare and clinical education can function as sites of both oppression and liberation, while learning practical approaches for integrating disability perspectives and lived experience into educational practice.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain key frameworks for understanding disability, including medical, social, and political models, and distinguish disability rights from disability justice while recognizing their intersections and synergies.
  2. Identify how ableism manifests in healthcare and clinical education, including through assumptions about quality of life, agency, language, medicalization, pity, infantilization, and inspiration, as well as its intersection with racism and other systems of oppression.
  3. Describe how lived experiences of disability, including the use of standardized patients, community engagement, and creative approaches such as spoken word poetry, can deepen disability consciousness and strengthen clinical education.
  4. Analyze healthcare and clinical education as non-neutral spaces that can perpetuate or disrupt oppression, and apply principles of disability ethics and justice to promote more equitable practice.
  5. Evaluate the use of simulation and other experiential approaches for developing disability competencies, including strategies for assessing effectiveness and recognizing potential challenges and pitfalls.
