Overview

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Diabetic Limb Salvage Conference is providing compelling content for the 2021 conference in a virtual format. This annual conference focuses on a multidisciplinary team approach that provides each member of the healthcare team with the education and resources needed to heal wounds and prevent amputations. It features a prominent international faculty that promotes the importance of a multispecialty approach in limb salvage. The course is designed for healthcare practitioners of all specialties and promotes an evidence-based approach with emphasis on take-home points, techniques, and functional outcomes. The meeting format will include didactic lectures, specialty symposia, and video surgical case demonstrations for the purpose of providing an interactive learning experience.

Exciting additions to the agenda include a tour of Center for Wound Healing at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Cadaveric Symposium, Networking Opportunities, and comprehensive lectures given by internationally recognized faculty.

Objectives

Nurse:
1. Analyze the public health crisis of diabetic limb loss.
2. Discuss the pain of sensory loss and non-compliance to care.
3. Examine the options in vascular interventional technology and techniques, both surgical and endovascular.
4. Promote the practice of functional limb salvage so that patients maximize their active ambulatory status.
5. Navigate the complexities of biomechanics, limb salvage, the problem wound, wound based infection, preserving limb length.
6. Cite the financial and social impact of diabetic limb salvage and amputation.

Occupational Therapist:
1. Assess the utilization of different ambulatory offloading devices in the management of a diabetic foot ulcer.
2. Differentiate the implications of different types of amputations which can occur with a patient with a diabetic foot wound and the ramifications of each on the patient’s functional status.
3. Identify various comorbidities that occur with diabetes and their impact on wound healing and patients’ overall health.
4. Identify various surgical interventions utilized with patients who have a diabetic foot ulcer.
5. Evaluate the impact of an amputation on the patient’s quality of life and the role of a support group.

Physical Therapist:
1. Summarize the benefits of plastic surgery intervention in the process of limb salvage.
2. Identify comorbidities and frailty factors which affect wound healing following surgical intervention or development of an ulcer.
3. Cite recommendations for treatment of edematous limbs including lymphatic management.
4. Compare the benefits of limb salvage versus amputation and their effect on functional outcomes.
5. Apply the latest recommendations in the treatment of Charcot Foot Deformity to best therapeutic practice for maximizing patient mobility.

Physician:
