Overview
Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are among the most disabling and costly conditions suffered by Americans. 60% of all unintentional injuries involve the musculoskeletal system. In the United states, musculoskeletal injuries account for the largest number of years lost to disability (Murray, JAMA, 2013). Within the US military, non-combat-related MSKI have accounted for 68,000 service members annually who could not be deployed and remains the largest unsolved public health problem facing the US military (Grimm, SMAR, 2019). Many of these injuries require surgical management by orthopaedic surgeons. The management of these injuries across all active populations is rapidly evolving beginning with an increased understanding of the history of the individual disease, the physical diagnosis of each condition, imaging of the affected area, and treatment to include the operative and non-operative means to keep active individuals in their respective activities. The rapidly evolving management for all of these injuries requires an integrated team that includes not only orthopaedic surgeons, but also allied health professionals such as nurses in the clinic and operating rooms, physical therapists facilitating both non-operative treatments as well as post-operative rehabilitation, and athletic trainers who often identify injuries at their earliest and also assist with treatment of the injured athlete. Surgical management continues to be refined and optimized to the particular injury in an individual patient. The greater understanding of injury pathophysiology has opened the field of orthobiologics and the promise of regenerative medicine. An explosion of interest in this field is propelling the field of musculoskeletal care, yet the optimal application for these technologies is still to be determined. An even more significant gap in understanding rests with decision-making in the return to activity and return to play portion of care of active individuals and athletes. Convincing evidence-based guidelines for return to play/activity are in scarce supply with such decisions often dependent on anecdotal experience. With the increase in interest in the collection of patient-reported outcomes for research, the promise of big data approaches to refining return to play decision making is not far over the horizon. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has had significant influence on how all medicine is practiced. Its specific influence on orthopaedic surgery will be discussed as part of a session on practice management. The purpose of this three-day seminar is to provide up to date information on the pathogenesis of common orthopaedic injuries as well as provide evidence-based recommendations on the management of these conditions. The seminar will focus on the most common injuries to the shoulder and knee as well as arthritis affecting these joints. Specific training on physical diagnosis skills will be emphasized as well as imaging of these injuries. Innovations in non-operative management will be discussed and the role of orthobiologics will be featured. Surgical innovations will continue to be a strong emphasis of the course with attention paid to the role of allied health professionals such as nurses, athletic trainers, and physical therapists throughout the spectrum of care. A particular focus of the seminar will be on return-to-play/activity symposium that will be interactive and case-based with expert athletic trainers, physical therapists, and orthopaedic surgeons featured in the expert panels. The central role of the team physician across the spectrum of care for the injured athlete will also be featured. Through this course, the gap between state-of-the-art practice and current practices will be closed in order to provide a high quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patients with orthopaedic injuries. We believe this approach will improve the quality of care provided to patients, decrease the risk of complications and morbidity, and reduce the overall burden of orthopaedic injuries on the patient and society.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the Healthcare Team will be able to:

  1. Identify the most common orthopaedic conditions of the knee and shoulder and their significance to the burden of overall disease to society.
  2. Perform the most appropriate physical examination maneuvers on the knee and shoulder when evaluating an injured patient.
  3. Identify the currently available, FDA-approved orthobiologic interventions for knee and shoulder conditions and utilize the appropriate application of each intervention.
  4. For the management of osteoarthritis of the knee and shoulder, describe non-operative measures, state-of-the-art injection therapy, osteotomy, partial arthroplasty, and total joint arthroplasty options for the spectrum of arthritis for each joint.
  5. Identify the optimal imaging modalities to diagnose and guide treatment of common knee and shoulder injuries in the acute, subacute, and chronic presentations.
  6. Utilize state-of-the-art on-field diagnostic maneuvers and initial management of common orthopaedic injuries.
  7. Recognize the pathophysiologic effects of COVID-19 and their evolving influence on orthopaedic surgery and apply mitigation techniques to minimize the effect on patient outcomes.
  8. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries.
  9. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries.

Your health and safety are MedStar Health, Inc.’s top priority, and we are taking the necessary precautions to make ensure this year’s events are safe as we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19.

Cherry Blossom Seminar is committed to providing a welcoming and safe learning environment while cautiously planning for a live conference. We will continue to monitor federal, state and local recommendations and will update these protocols and measures as appropriate.

We reserve the right to modify these policies and procedures at any time given the rapidly changing nature of the current global pandemic. General safety and wellness measures include but are not limited to:

Hand sanitizing stations throughout public areas
Cleaning between sessions
Signage posted with reminders for physical distancing and hand washing

COVID-19 vaccination is required for attendance. In cases where an attendee or exhibitor has a valid medical or religious exemption, a negative PCR COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival to the hotel will be required.

Please check back for updates on how to input your COVID vaccination or exemption status prior to the conference.

Mask Requirement
Cherry Blossom Seminar is continuously monitoring mask requirements and will update this page accordingly. While masks are not mandated, we strongly encourage you to wear a mask while inside the conference areas and hotel.

Venue
Following medical expert guidance to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, face masks or coverings may be required in hotel indoor public areas and when moving around in outdoor areas at Hyatt hotels globally, based on local or national mandates or guidance. For specific requirements, please contact the hotel directly.

In light of recent CDC and AHLA guidance, and after considerable review, we have updated our face coverings mandate for fully vaccinated guests and colleagues at Hyatt hotels in the U.S.   Learn More

Daily Self Health Screening
MedStar Health recommends that all participants screen themselves daily for symptoms. Symptoms may appear 2 – 14 days after exposure to the virus. The following symptoms are outlined on the CDC Website indicating an individual may have COVID-19:

Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea

Individuals who have these symptoms and are unwell should not attend the Cherry Blossom Seminar. Additionally, if the person is onsite, affected individuals should notify event organizers to allow for additional communication to participants.

TRAVEL TO THE U.S.

Effective December 2, 2021, all travelers to the U.S. must show proof of full vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 1 day, prior to boarding their flight to the U.S. Those traveling by land do not need to provide a negative test. For purposes of entry into the United States, vaccines accepted will include FDA approved or authorized and WHO Emergency Use Listing vaccines. Existing visa policies remain in place. Please check back regularly for the latest information.
