This interdisciplinary conference brings together an expert faculty to present on the clinical management and research of patients with benign esophageal disorders. The activity will educate the audience on identifying the pathophysiology associated with benign esophageal pathology, educating them on proper testing and indications for surgery. In addition, discussing current standards of care in the innovative treatment of benign esophageal disorders that are currently being performed at MedStar Health will be discussed.



Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the evaluation of esophageal motility disorders including the indications and use of high resolution manometry, impedance planimetry system, and pH testing.
  2. Discuss medical and endoscopic management of esophageal motility disorders including GERD, achalasia, peptic strictures, and esophageal diverticulum.
  3. Describe advances in the diagnosis and endoscopic management of Barrett’s esophagus.
  4. Identify those patients who will benefit from surgical intervention for esophageal dysmotility disorder.
  5. Consider patients for surgical intervention or continue medical management.
  6. Identify which hiatal hernia patients may need surgical consultation vs observation.
  7. Manage the symptomatic patient after anti-reflux or hiatal hernia surgery.
  8. Identify necessary steps for the work up of esophageal diverticulum.
  9. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients with benign esophageal disorders.
  10. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with benign esophageal disorders to build a foregut program.
