Overview
Diabetes remains a leading cause of death and disability. Nearly half of the American adult population has been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes. Glycemic control continues to be suboptimal despite the wide range of available medications and advances in technology. The Issam Cheikh Update on Diabetes XLVI  symposium provides an overview of the advances in diabetes care. The challenges of diabetes management, and practical ways to overcome these barriers, will be addressed. Presentations will focus on the best practices in controlling glucose through technology, medications, and individualizing treatments for patients with diabetes.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options for the prevention and management of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
  2. Identify effective behavioral and patient centered strategies to improve compliance in the management of diabetes and its complications.
  3. Interpret the reports generated from Continuous Glucose Monitor Systems (CGMS) and make lifestyle and medication adjustments.
  4. Recognize hypoglycemia and summarize its pathophysiology, including negative impacts, and how to initiate a workup for hypoglycemia in symptomatic individuals.
  5. Summarize the glycemic effects of steroids and review several potential treatment options for patients who are receiving steroids.
  6. State the stages of Type 1 diabetes and the use of Teplizumab.
  7. Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of diabetic patients.
  8. Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with diabetes.
